Shounen Goodness After perusing through the fall 2006 anime season, we at Doremi have found nothing to translate. Shows were either sucky, already translated, or in the process of being translated. Then the good folks over at Umai wanted me to translate this. Maceart and I watched the first few episodes. Maceart decided he can translate. I didn't stop him. So here you go. In any case, expect sporadic releases since Umai loves their releases spotlessly flawless. Enjoy the battles of Kenichi as he aspires to become, well, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi.
Winter Garden( 1 items ) What is this? This is one of those shows that we decide to do just by looking at the picture. Then there's the fact that the characters are from that ultra-famous Digi Charat show, with the titular two main folks all grown up. Other than that, it's a pretty normal girly romance anime without any emo subtexts. If you are looking for a nice, calm OAV for the holiday spirit, here you go.
Today in Class 5-2( 4 items ) Another show? Yes, you better believe it! (No Naruto pun intended) This is about a bunch of fifth graders and their, well, not so fifth-grade-like lives. I mean, the sexual tensions are unbearable. Ryota is such a lucky stud. I wonder why my fifth grade wasn't like that. There's a character whose hair color was completely not what I had expected, but oh well. Anyway, there are five episodes in all, and if the producers follow the manga like they did quite nicely, it'll be a good show. Just don't watch this in public, though, or else you'll be looked at strangely. Even worse, the cops would probably give you a citation. I'm serious. This is borderline child smut. But oh, it is fabulous.
Strawberry Panic( 1 items ) Yes! More lesbian tendencies! Now, I was tingling for some more lesbian tendencies after Mai-Otome, and the April season just dawned on me. The moment I saw the first episode, I jumped on it. This show is perfect for Doremi. Imagine that other show a few months ago called Maria-sama: subtract the angst, times four the number of girls, erase all men. There you have it, Strawberry Panic. Brilliance. Oh yeah I should give a plot summary. It's about this girl named Aoi Nagisa who transfers into this high class girl's academy, St. Miator. She catches the fancy of the school's number one idol, the Etoile. Add that up with the two other schools, Spica and Lilim, and you've got plenty of action. Review here - by Ladholyman
sola( 17 items ) New Project? From the screenplay writer of Kanon and the character designer of Da Capo comes an epic tale of... I have no idea what. It has Mamiko Noto in it, who plays Mois from Keroro and Shimako from Maria-sama. There are also a whole lot of other famous voice actors in this, like Tamao from Strawberry Panic and Mai from Mai-Hime. As you can see, all the voices are from shows that we have done. In other words, this is the first time I've done a show completely based on who voices the characters. Anyway, expect a real plot synopsis when the real anime rolls around in April. For now, take a listen to the audio drama and be prepared to be very confused.
Petopeto-san( 1 items ) Keywords: Kappas, little sisters, creature racism. Granted, this show will only appeal to a certain demographic. People like me, who despise watching feminine men in giant ugly mechs beat the crap of of each other, will like this. This show dives deep into the subject of racism, a subject which still pervades today. Will humans and monsters ever live at peace with each other? Many things make this show rule the roost, from the cement block sisters to Petoko, the sticky monster, and of course, the one-and-only Sahara Kuguru. She's the one holding a butcher knife in the picture. She kicks ass.
Pale Cocoon( 1 items ) What is this? Makoto Shinkai has his Beyond the Clouds and Voices of a Distant Star. Well, Pale Cocoon is another one of those OAVs. Frankly, it's one of the best 22 minutes you'll ever spend watching anime. It features science fiction, a touch of environmentalism, and awesome animation. And, as a bonus, I've included a .pdf here that explains some of the more subtle plot points. DO NOT DOWNLOAD/LOOK AT THIS DOCUMENT WITHOUT AT LEAST WATCHING THE SHOW ONCE. I've warned you.
Bamboo Blade( 26 items ) Girls with (wooden) swords. This anime is awesome. Or rather, the manga of this anime is awesome. It has pretty girls, crazy comical antics, and a pointless plot. I love it. Athrun's voice from Gundam Seed is in this, and boy, has he fallen from his high pedestal. You may also hear Alice's voice from ARIA, but she doesn't talk a lot. Enjoy the clashes of shinai and the voice of Kamina commanding his female harem. Anyway, Bamboo Blade is about a poor teacher, Koujirou, and his quest to get free sushi. All he has to do is to gather five female members for his kendo club and beat the crap out of his Senpai's kendo club. That is all.
Mai-Otome( 7 items ) What's it about? Well, it's not your typical magical girl show... and it's not your typical Gundam robot-fest. For people who watched Mai-HiME, the parallel universe and the appearance of old characters make this show kick-ass. For those who haven't watched the first series, plenty of lesbian tendencies and conspiracies and transformation scenes and girls with big weapons beating the crap out of each other. Oh, and don't forget the awesome music by Yuki Kajiura and the sweet characterization. Just go watch it already.
Mai-HiME Specials( 1 items ) What in the world are these specials, anyhow? They are short vignettes for each of the characters in Mai-HiME. Most are aimed for fanservice, though some also explain the storyline a bit more. Don't watch these if you haven't the faintest clue what Mai-HiME is. For those who have, these specials are mighty fun.
Kasimasi( 1 items ) Now, what's this? It's an anime, of course. And it kicks ass. (Why would I do an anime that's not kick ass?) Anyways, this features lesbian tendencies, romance, drama, and a whole lot of comedy. It features spaceships and aliens for those science-fiction folks, plenty of heartbreaks for those dramatic types, and yuri for people like me. There's even a gay buddy thrown in for good measure, and he kicks the most ass. Well, he's not gay anymore as of the end of episode one, because he has turned into a harem anime male lead! Not exactly, but close. Whatever.
Happy Seven( 13 items ) Information Maceart decided to help out a friend's group on this awesome show. There's this girl named Sakogami Amano who has the worst luck in the world. One day, she finds this club that dishes out luckiness, and then the wackiness starts. Featuring little girls, harem tendencies, and a whole lot of weaponry, this is a show that you cannot miss. There are also little boys, if you're into that sort of thing.
Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas( 1 items ) So what's this about? Probably the most bad-ass anime you'll see with a gargoyle. This show is touching at times, action-packed at others, and just overall filled with soul. Download this now and witness the badassery and the GAR that is Gar-kun. Anyway, this is the story of a gargoyle who protects the shopping district of Goshiki. Everyday adventures include a little girl who can read people's hearts, a clever and stylish thief, along with mechanical robots. There's something for everyone here.
Binbou Shimai Monogatari( 10 items ) Whoa, whoa, another project? Due to time constraints, I've decided not to do Chokotto Sister. Instead, I chose another show about sisters, also known as Poor Sisters Story. It's about two sisters, Kyo and Asu, ages 15 and 9, respectively, who are dirt poor. But they're happy! Follow their daily adventures living in a 40 year old, beat up, one room apartment in Tokyo. At times sappy, at times corny, and at times overly sentimental, this show has something for everyone. It'll either make you tear up with emotion or gag at the sugary sweetness. For me, it was a combination of both. Review here - by Maceart.
Dai Mahou Touge( 5 items ) Wow, some violence. Yes, this show has violence. And a whole lot of it. Plenty of blood, plenty of gratuitous breaking of arms, legs, knees, thighs, heads, and any other body part, along with the overabundance of peeling. This is not for the faint of heart. Vice City has nothing on this. Neither does Elfen Lied. The violence comes in swift and kicks you right in the groin. By the same director of Guu, this show does not pull any punches. Sure, it's a magical girl show. Sure, the plot is completely incoherent. Sure, there are way too many puns regarding Japanese culture. However, if you need something to shock your friends into watching anime (or not watching anime), then this is the show for you. Review here - by Ladholyman.
Ayu-Mayu Theater( 1 items ) What's this about? In 2003, there was this nifty anime called Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (KgNE), also known as Rumbling Hearts in the United States. Although adapted from a game where the protagonist's main goal is to make love with the female characters, KgNE managed to entice and popularize this genre. Now, in 2007, the two joke characters from KgNE makes a huge comeback in their own movie. And what a movie it is, complete with obscure puns, extreme vulgarity, tsunderes, moe moe, 4chan lingo, and the like. If you haven't seen KgNE yet, don't watch this. It makes one of the most tragic scenes of KgNE into comedy of the most absurd scale. In any case, the picture looks nothing like Ayu and Mayu in the movie.
Huh? That's exactly what I asked, too. Anyways, I volunteered to to translate this little OAV, and I sure was confused who everyone was. It's a nifty episode, so don't miss it. It has the most dweebiest male lead ever to lead an OAV. It has pretty girls too, so no complaints there. If anyone can explain to me what the plot is then hop on in to #doremi @ irc.rizon.net. I have not played the game. Review here - by Ladholyman
